My Fulbright Lecture

On Jan. 17 I was honored to give the Fulbright-Freud annual lecture at Berggasse 19. My topic was ‘Beyond a Dangerous Method: Sabina Spielrein and the Death Instinct,’ and I had two wonderful respondents, Prof. Hermann Westerink (a colleague from AAR who now is teaching in Germany), and Jeanne Wolff-Bernstein (a Fulbright alum, and American psychoanalyst now practicing and teaching in Vienna). The evening was very well attended, and I was honored that Susanne Heine, a well known scholar of psychology and religion recently retired from the Protestant theology department of the UniVie, met me for coffee in advance of the lecture, and then was in attendance (even though unbeknownst to me it was her birthday!) it was a great privilege to bring Spielrein’s voice back to the very street where she first presented her paper to Freud’s circle.
