Aida Konditorei

Another well known place to grab coffee (but more hectic than the traditional cafés) is the Aida Konditorei chain, known for its very sugary tortes. One is located near the Stefansdom at Singerstrasse 1. Its window display had these two animated figures – a little scary! Post New Year’s they are dressed up for Ball Season or “Fasching,” a pre-Lenten season of formal dances all over Vienna where young society ladies still make their debut in Cotillion formation, tourists and locals dance to the strains of Strauss but also in some venues more contemporary music, and political deals are sometimes made behind the scenes – the occasion of a protest that actually tied up traffic and resulted in some smashed windows (an extremely rare event in Vienna, thought to be perpetrated by a “fringe element”) at the Akademischer Bal, a known event for right-leaning politicos. Here in another store window top hats, gloves and masques are on display:
