Medieval tower – gateway between the Charles Bridge and Old Town’s medieval shopping streets. People were pouring through the tower gate – bustling and jostling among tourists and Christmas shoppers. This could be considered also the gateway to shopping frenzy! One of the most stunning shops I saw was filled with Bohemian crystal chandeliers, glasses and other objects. “Bohemia” is the ancient name for the Czech lands, and has been retained as a name for a very distinctive, colorful and ornate type of crystalmaking begun in the Renaissance.
The best shops sell other distinctively Czech wares, including garnet and amber jewelry (which I also saw in Budapest), and intricate antique and modern clocks and watches. There are many antique and modern booksellers throughout Prague. And then, of course, there is also plenty of kitsch!
