Lessing Statue in Judenplatz

Lessing Statue in Judenplatz

Gotthold Ephraim Lessing (1729-81), poet, playwright and essayist, is memorialized in Vienna in the center of Judenplatz, opposite the more recent Holocaust Memorial. He was a friend of the philosopher Moses Mendelssohn, and a champion of religious tolerance. An interesting article from 1935, the year the monument was erected, can be found at http://www.jta.org/1935/07/05/archive/statue-to-lessing-is-erected-on-jewish-square-in-vienna.
