Kindertransport

Kindertransport

Today (Nov. 9) is the 75th anniversary of Kristallnacht (the night of broken glass) when police and soldiers stood aside and watched as anti-Semitic crowds, egged on by Nazi organizers, smashed and looted Jewish homes and businesses with impunity across Austria as well as Germany. There have been a number of events to remember this anniversary. Thursday evening at Christ Church (my church here), there was a lecture by a historian of the Kindertransport – the quickly organized movement to send Jewish children out of Nazi controlled territories to safety, mostly in the UK, as well as a very moving speech by Fred Gruber, one of the last children to escape, now a retired nonagenarian and a member of Christ Church.
