Hugo Hoffmannsthal’s birthplace

Hugo Hoffmannsthal's birthplace

A random sighting – on Salesianerstrasse, on my way to church, I realized I have been passing by Hoffmannsthal’s birthplace. Hoffmannsthal was the author of numerous plays, poems, and essays, including the libretto for several Richard Strauss operas – including the poignant opera ‘Der Rosenkavalier’ (the opera I just saw in Budapest.) His works are sometimes linked with Freud’s as exemplars of fin-de-siècle thought and its preoccupation with interiority, psychology, and paradox. There were significant differences as well. This is fodder for a longer essay in some other time and place!
