Extremes of opulence and dereliction

Buildings in the inner city are heavily ornamented with statuary, scrollwork, and ubiquitous putti (cherubs). But often these decorate buildings that have experienced extremes of war and erosion, and the economy has not yet recovered enough for a general renovation of the building infrastructure on streets where the tourists mostly don’t go.
