Dr. Peter Schur

Dr. Peter Schur

Today I had the privilege of meeting Dr. Peter Schur, a rheumatologist affiliated with Brigham and Women’s Hospital, a premiere teaching hospital in Boston (where I once worked as a secretary to pay for my PhD at Harvard!), and son of Dr. Max Schur, Freud’s personal physician at the end of his life. Peter has memories of having to flee Vienna at the age of 5, and has subsequently written remembrances of his father and Freud’s treatment. Max Schur’s papers were first studied in detail by the historian Peter Gay, and he is remembered for assisting Freud in ending his life when his suffering from cancer had finally destroyed all quality of life.
