trompe l'oeil mirrored stair

Stift Melk has a number of intricate Baroque “trompe l’oeil” (fool the eye) decorations. One of the most breathtaking is not on the ceiling (where you usually find deceptive 3-dimensional porches, pillars, and putti – the little fat angel cherubs that cling everywhere here) – but down a spiral stairwell. A strategically placed round mirror makes a 2-story spiral staircase appear to be infinite, and creates a shivery feeling of vertigo!
