Memorial Plaque on a Sammelwohnung

Memorial Plaque on a SammlungWohnung

This plaque appears on the building next door to mine on Herminengasse in the 2nd district where I am living (Leopoldstadt). It is a tragic reminder of the atrocities that were perpetrated in Vienna during the Holocaust. The plaque commemorates 39 “men, women and 1 girl/maiden” who as Jews were forced to live together after the Anschluss (the annexation of Austria by Hitler in 1938) in a “Sammelwohnung” or collective apartment until they were deported to the concentration camps. All but 1 were murdered. The plaque has separate quadrants showing the names of known residents, and one quadrant representing those whose names were unknown. The Freud family house at 19 Berggasse was also forced to be a Sammelwohnung after the Freud family fled to London in 1939.
